TRUMANSBURG FARMER'S MARKET PAVILION PROJECT

Village of Trumansburg Community-build Pavilion Project 2009-2011

In November 2009, the Village of Trumansburg was awarded a $25,000 matching grant from NYS Agriculture and Markets for "Capital Improvements to Farmers Markets". The Pavilion Committee was formed to set up two committees: one to design & build two single-loaded pavilions (20 booths), a gazebo and a pedestrian entrance into the village park, and a second to organize a benefit to raise additional funds to cover paid labor and some materials. Located at the intersection of Routes 96 and 227, these park structures will be available for Trumansburg Farmers Market on Wednesday, 4pm-7pm, June - October, and other community groups to hold special events.

Part I: Dec.09 - Jan.2010:
Timber-frame pavilion final design, presentation models and drawing created for Village Board of Trustees's approval to go ahead with project. (mouse over pictures for captions)

Single-loaded timber-frame pavilion. Design development by: Design/Build Committee, Double Dog Timberworks, and Tugley Wood Timberframing. Sketch by John Ullberg. Scale models of pavilions showing parking spaces located on plan of village park; made by John Ullberg. Alan Vogel (design/build committee) and Maria Klemperer-Johnson (Double Dog Timberworks) discussing final touches on pavilion scale model; made by John Ullberg.

Part II: March/April 2010:
Initial tasks included: Steel plate welding and galvanizing at Durand's Forge - plates will secure wood posts to concrete footers; Village park site preparation - build booth frame, dig holes for footers, installation of 42 concrete sona tube footers. (mouse over pictures for captions)

Chris Langenberg demonstrates how to weld steel plates together to a volunteer. Durand Van Doren, (background) donated use of his shop for this portion of the project.  tubes being cut down to workable 4 ft. lengths to serve as forms for concrete footers.  Carson Excavating breaking ground for 42 concrete footers to be located at each stake.  Department of Public Works (DPW) supervisor Bruce Vann and Zoning Code Enforcement Officer Ed Hetherington checking out footer holes dug (3.5 foot depth) by the auger donated by Carson Excavating.  A two booth (each 10' x 10') wooden frame served a model to ensure proper placement of of footer holes.  Pouring concrete into sona tube footers and tamping/smooth - concrete, composed of sand, gravel, cement [powder] and water) takes several days to mature.  To ensure proper drainage and avoid unnecessary lawn maintenance, the village DPW staff removed sod from the area to be covered by the pavilion roofs. A layer of fine-crushed, tamped pea gravel will be covered by a layer of larger grade gravel.

Part III: April 2010:
Initial tasks included: Tree to lumber preparation, timber-framing work days. (mouse over pictures for captions)

Scott Hannen of Double Dog Timberworks removes bark from tree in preparation for milling.  Scott Hannen of Double dog Timberworks milling tree into lumber for the timber-framing pavilions.  Pavilion plan of perspective and foundation with hand tools.  Overview of volunteers cutting tenons and mortices on girds, and cutting rafter tails in the background.  Project leader Alan Vogel, retired from teaching shop at BOCES, describes the pavilion project and safety tips to community-build volunteers.  Stacked and finished rafter tails.  Shaving wood into pegs to connect the timber-frame sections.  Aaron Dennis, of Tugley Wood Timberframing hand-sawing to finish off an end of a post.  Maria Klemperer-Johnson, of Double Dog Timberworks, measures to ensure the proper cut.

Thank you to all of our generous donors who helped make this project possible!
